Two Brentwood High School Students Receive National Honors

Brentwood High School is excited to announce an historic honor; two students receive recognition from the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

David Rivera is one of 5,000 students in the U.S. to be named as a 2012-2013 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. According to the College Board, he was
selected from about 253,000 Latino/Hispanic students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in October of 2011. Based on his test score and his GPA of 3.5 or higher he has the extra honor of being designated a Scholar (students with a 3.0-3.49 are recognized as Honorable Mention recipients).

Although the NHRP does not provide monetary
awards this is a significant academic achievement that has resulted in scholarships from some of the institutions where David has applied for admission.  More details on the NHRP can be found online at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about/nhrp.html

We are equally proud to recognize Lucille Sappington for being named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 students nationwide are selected as National Merit Commended Students. Although Commended students are not eligible
for the National Merit Scholarship Awards, Commended Students are to be recognized because they placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in October of 2011.

Brentwood High School Principal Dr. Donald Rugraff says these honors are exciting and also indicative of the caliber of student and the education they receive in the Brentwood School District.

“Lucy and David represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in this highly competitive recognition program. We are proud to have them represent Brentwood High School with these national honors,” Rugraff said.

Both students are in the process of applying and visiting the colleges of their choice. They will be recognized at Brentwood High School’s annual Spotlight on Seniors awards night May 2, 2013.
