Brentwood had no answer for Carnahan’s Steven Baynham on Monday night. Baynham’s 28 points led the Cougars over the Eagles, 65-51, in the Class 3, District 5 Tournament on Monday night at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School.

Brentwood’s season ends with a 9-15 record. Senior center Amadou Cisse could only watch from the Eagles bench as the 6-foot-2 Carnahan forward dominated the paint throughout the game. Cisse was out with a hip injury.

Brentwood trailed by 10 or more points for most of the game, but clawed back late in the fourth quarter. A string of Carnahan fouls and turnovers brought the Eagles within three points at the 2:15 mark, as Brentwood desperately did everything it could to salvage a season that was rapidly slipping away.

But a three-pointer by Carnahan, followed by a quick Brentwood turnover, all but ended the Eagles’ hopes for a rally.

Junior Diontez Edwards led Brentwood with 11 points on the night. Sophomore Rekardo Owens scored 10 and freshman Melvin Erby added nine. Senior Andrew Erby scored six in his final game of a very good basketball career at Brentwood.

The tough loss marks the end of a tough season-ending stretch for coach Brad Kern's team, which dropped eight of its last 10 games. The Eagles went 4-6 in the South Central Athletic Association Conference.

Carnahan advances to the second round, where it will play Maplewood Richmond Heights at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
