Brentwood Winter Guard Girls Win First Place

The group has Brentwood girls from eight-grade through high school senior.

On Feb. 25th, the Winter Guard group competed at Francis Howell North High School.

Out of twelve teams in their division, after the preliminaries, they were in 1st place, and were one of six teams to move on to finals. They won 1st place in the finals in their division by nearly four points, and are currently .9 points from being promoted up into a higher class for the fourth year in a row.

Ten girls, from eighth-grade to high school senior are in the group, and they’ve been together for four years.

Kate Anthony, the group’s organizer, said they compete on a basketball court in front of a live audience and a panel of judges.

Each performance is about four minutes long. She said it contains elements of dance, and is similar to poms, but is more theatrical.

She said the girls are very involved in other activities, such as dance, classes, gymnastics, track and softball.

“It allows a different group of girls to come together and perform, that maybe wouldn’t be together otherwise,” she said, “especially since we have 8th-graders in the group.”

Anthony said girls can get scholarships into college through winter guard.
