Car Hits Maplewood Pedestrian on His Birthday

The 72-year-old Maplewood resident was crossing against the lights in rush-hour traffic.

It wasn't the best of birthdays for Maplewood resident Raymond Raridon.

Just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, the 72-year-old man was hit crossing Manchester Road at the Sutton Boulevard intersection. He had been crossing against the lights when he was struck by a car heading west. The sun was setting directly ahead of the driver.

Raridon was conscious after the accident and wasn't bleeding, said Sgt. Anthony Cavanaugh of the Maplewood Police Department.

Another vehicle then rear-ended the car that hit Raridon. The drivers of both vehicles were on the scene but had no comment.

Raridon was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital for a leg injury following the accident.

I was facing North on Sutton at Manchester. We did not see the actual accident, but at the emergency vehicles arrived we turned left (West) on Manchester and immediately was blinded by the sun. I feel know way anyone could have seen a pedristian step out into the street, much less against the light. The driver whom hit the pedistrian should have no fault.
