Maplewood and Richmond Heights allow backyard chickens, and on Saturday many of them came to Ryan Hummert Park for the first Chickenfest.

Organizer Geri Redden estimated at least 70 chicken-keepers and their birds came.

"We were just doing this from scratch, so to speak," she said. "I thought it was very successful."

They contested for the largest egg, the prettiest egg, the best layer, the prettiest chicken and the smartest chicken.

They mostly enjoyed the afternoon, as their chickens, tethered by a cord on one leg picked in the grass.
