Gumbo Shop Introduces Weekend Crawfish Boil

The cajun café hopes to attract customers with its latest venture

I'm a huge fan of cajun food. I am crazy about gumbo, I go bananas for fried okra, and poboy sandwiches make my tastebuds sing. With that said, it's probably no surprise that The Gumbo Shop, located on Manchester Road in Rock Hill, is one of my go-to spots for great food.

The tiny shop has been a neighborhood mainstay for more than 10 years, when Sid and Mary Roberts first opened the restaurant. Although the reins were recently handed over to Jon and Holly Kercher, the menu and tastes have remained the same. Customers adore The Gumbo Shop's take on fried oysters, crawfish etouffee and even chicken tenders.

However, starting this Saturday, something new will be cooking at The Gumbo Shop: crawfish boils. Allan Chow is a friend of the new managers and will be cooking up crawfish every Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

Customers can order the crawfish plate ($7.99), which comes with crawfish, corn, sausage and mushrooms. Alternatively, catering orders can be placed; prices are $7.99 per pound for a minimum of 10 pounds. Those interested in catering are encouraged to place their orders on the Tuesday before to ensure satisfaction.

For the others?

"I recommend getting here early," Chow said. "The crawfish is only available until we run out."

No need to tell me twice. I know where I'll be this Saturday!

I'm afraid that I will have to warn some potentially disappointed readers that the picture above was a food dump that we put out for Stephanie. A more representative picture of a crawfish plate is here on the website.

Jambalaya tends to take first place with me, although I'm not exclusive. My main reason for commenting is I love the Gumbo Shop. Then, a New Orleans native just opened a Creole eatery in Soulard, that's supposed to be yummy, Riverbend. And pass the hot sauce!
