There were two big moments in the Maplewood Richmond Heights boys 68-56 win over Carnahan Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils led Carnahan not so comfortably throughout the game. It was 51-43 after three quarters, and with four minutes to go Carnahan was nipping at the 6-7 point-spread range, as play was becoming more physical.
With two minutes left, senior Kahlid Hagens got free with a pass from senior Aaron Spudich and pushed MRH’s lead to 12 points with an emphatic dunk. That was the first big moment.
The next MRH possession had the look of a replay, but Hagens and ball flew out of control as he was ambushed by Carnahan seniors Trevor Roberts and Raymond Holmes. Pushing and words ensued, which resulted in a technical called against Carnahan, and Hagens shooting from the free throw line.
Both teams stayed cool the rest of the game, but kept to themselves and left quickly when it was over.
Senior Corey Frazier led MRH in scoring with 19. Hagens sunk 16, Aaron Spudich had 9 and Wes Williams had 7. All are seniors.
The win puts MRH at 9-1 and leaves Carnahan at 5-7. MRH next plays Normandy at home on Friday.
