Is This the Last Straw for Jumpin' Jupiter?
The Maplewood night club has had financial and and community relations problems since last year.
The Jumpin' Jupiter night club received another eviction notice this week. The first one came last May for nonpayment of $40,506 in rent, but the club managed to stay in business.
On Monday, the club was issued its fifth such notice. An eviction notice was taped to the door on Wednesday.
The business owed $40,312 to its landlord, Maple King LLC, on March 4, according to a court record. Jumpin' Jupiter is owned by James G. Callahan.
Since the club's May 2012 eviction notice, it lost a company of performers and was accused three times of not paying state sales taxes.
In June, scantily clad employees bringing in business on the sidewalk ruffled feathers in Maplewood.
The business has not returned a request for comment.

This isn't surprising....I heard that the other troupe that was performing there, the troupe that was doing the "Speakeasy Cinema" and all the charity events chose to part ways with the venue in January and are now at Cicero's. Considering the venue's history I could only imagine why a troupe performing to weekly sell out crowds would leave for another venue. When they stopped performing at the Jupiter I stopped going to the Jupiter and instead give my business to their shows at Cicero's now.

I saw that show "Speakeasy Cinema" that apparently left the Jupiter to play at Cisero and it wasn't what I was expecting. Tube socks, granny panties and a T-Rex looking replica of " Slimmer" from Ghostbusters isn't exactly what I was looking for in a "Burlesque" show. I called to complain to the Jupiter and they offered me free admission to their house show which was 20x better. Plus the Jumpin Jupiter venue is absolutely gorgeous. This Jim guy must be a rock star... He's practically famous amongst this group of regulosers LOLOLOL

Negative press doesn't exactly "help" businesses thrive.... The Maplewood community and the media have been relentless to them since they opened their doors. This should be a WARNING to anyone trying to bring any new business into Maplewood.
The Jumpin' Jupiter should move to an area of St. Louis that will support their swanky ambience and help make them thrive. I would hate to see them leave Maplewood... But this show must go on!

The city has bent over backwards to help 99.99% of the business who have come to Maplewood. The sleeze girls on the sidewalk were really, REALLY, bad. Plus, these people can't pay their bills. The Jumpin' Jupiter should probably jump to the east side.

I just drove by just now and there's a moving van out front and they're hauling out all sorts of kitchen equipment, tables, the bar, etc. Signs are down, tables in the window are gone (red curtains remain)...

Negative and flaky business owners don't exactly help businesses thrive either. I'm very sorry Jim Callahan could neither maintain his business or have much respect for the neighborhood where his business was. It sucks that he couldn't draw people to his club in Maplewood. Owning a club like the JJ is a TOUGH BUSINESS. I know this from my own experience in my "line of work". Diplomacy goes a long way. Self righteousness about not paying bills/performers/taxes and pissing off the locals will get you exactly nowhere. Unless you have mob connections. Kidding. Not.

I don't understand how you can claim that this is a TOUGH business and then slam the owner simultaneously. Do you always contradict yourself while making bold statements?
Soliciting business from the street in front of your doors after you hit a bump in the road seems pretty logical.. had the man been selling sandwiches no one would have batted an eye. It's unfortunate that the JJ upset a handful of neighbors, but I doubt it was as deliberate and tasteless as you and the media portrayed. Reporting the opinions of several residents who are clearly uptight and obviously not regular patrons of the Route 66 bar scene is seriously lacking objectivity.
From where I stand, which is an obviously less biased position given than I'm not in "the business" and therefore unthreatened by the existence of the JJ, I see that they just simply haven't been able to catch a break.
It seems their prior dance company, who quit and slandered them publicly immediately after nonpayment, were pretty relentless in their pursuit to destroy the JJ.
Mob ties? That's a bit dramatic... even for you. LoL
I've been reading up on the owner, James Callahan, and the man has had several successful business endeavors in St. Louis over the years. He is also a visionary... The Jumpin Jupiter is an amazing experience unlike anything I have seen here. I think I nailed it in my first post when I labeled him a "Rock Star". Hahhaaha

slan·der
/ˈslandər/
Noun
The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation.
Verb
Make false and damaging statements about (someone).
If someone can find actual examples of this in the prior dance company's statements, I'd love to see them. From what I observed, they made a statement, based on clear, verifiable facts after months of non-payment. And after it was resolved they made no other statements. They moved on (at least from what I could observe online).
Jim Callahan, on the other hand, made public, very verifiable slanderous and libelous statements about the dance company. A company which is also a small business, and has many of its own successful and notably publicized endeavors. It's not difficult to research either.
Before crying slander, you should research the definition. Yelling and screaming about how everyone is out to get you, is a lot like crying wolf...no one will believe you after a while and after refusing to take any personal responsibility.
In the end though, none of it matters, because if you don't pay your taxes and owe over 40,000 in rent, you made some incredibly bad business decisions that were bound to catch up to you.

"I see that they just simply haven't been able to catch a break" I have a somewhat bias perspective on this, but let's put all assumptions and experience with the JJ, good or bad to the side and consider the facts objectively, then surmount a conclusion.
JJ owes 40+k in back rent, over 8 months worth - this isn't new, it's 8 months old.
JJ was summoned to court via the state of missouri for not paying sales taxes on multiple instances.
JJ bounced several checks to performers, and was late for weeks on other payments
JJ lost two burlesque troupes, and dozens of employees in the same stretch of time.
The place claimed to be selling out shows for the past 6-8 months.
So if Jim is so wonderful, and business was improving, people were patronizing, drinks were being sold... but no bills were being paid... where exactly did the money at the cash register go? Clearly it didn't go to rent, it didn't go to taxes (check the multiple court cases for reference), and at times it didn't go to the cast of the 'sold out shows'.
Conclusion: Either there's a black hole of prior debt sucking it all up (not Mapleking's, VEP's Synful Burlesque, Maplewood nor state of Missouri's concern), or maybe someones nose is sucking it all up. HMMMM? It was only a matter of time before it crashed, time which only stretched on due to maplewood, Missouri Tax Revenue, and MapleKing being lenient in several instances. No one had a more relentless pursuit to destroy the JJ than it's own creator.

If you look at the past articles, citing Maple King LLC's filings with the court, it states he's evicted by the landlord and still owes $40,506 in rent. Compare that to the $40,312 owed in June 2012, which manifested the original eviction notice. Doing some math... estimating a maximum of $5k/month... he skipped out on 8 months of rent up unitll June, maybe paid rent since but never took care of that 40k from 2011/2012. Tack on a clear evasion or blind eye to sales taxes, plus skimping out on paying production companies timely and bouncing payroll checks, plus under paying his more recent burlesque company (i use the term lightly, support the performers and their drive, but not their sleezy captain). Now he trashes the place when he leaves, pizza boxes and cans everywhere and tore up the walpaper by hand to destroy it. Say what you want about the venue and the concept, the performers and the shows (much of it was primo for STL's standards) But ownership topples all of that goodness. Whenever i start to feel financially irresponsible, I remember Jim Calahan, and i feel like Donald Trump suddenly.

No one who initially posted on this blog... err, um excuse me... No one who brain farted hate speech like diarrhea splattered on a wall... had any desire to have an objective discussiom until I started challenging the issues.
I have proved my point in that most of you have exposed a very personal hatred for James Callahan.

The fact that you support a man and a company that has a well documented past of not paying employees, taxes, or bills speaks volumes on the type of person you are. That is all that is needed. Thank you. You've made your point loud and clear. Diarrhea indeed.

I'm not sure where I used hate speech, and I'm not sure where I got my panties in a twist. I haven't said anything mean or used rude language.
But regardless, Gidget, Boom Boom, Widgie, I think Hortense made a good point. Economy or not, it's one thing to struggle, and it's another thing to actively ignore laws and bills and phone calls.
If you're just a fan of the venue, you can support the idea without trashing the feelings of people who were quite burned, or stooping to trashy language.
Good luck with your classy, non-mud slinging discourse.

.I have accomplishes what I set out to do here... which was to expose that most, if not all, of you have a very personal hatred for James Callahan.
James Callahan slandered his dance company? I find it very hard to believe that someone would intentionally destroy their own product. I'm sure whatever you are referring to was done in retaliation to the dance companies attempts to ensure that he would not find another dance company to come work at the Jupiter. The basic application of logic would allow anyone with an IQ over 60 to draw that conclusion.
If anyone is yelling and screaming,... it can be found in the new flood of ranting that has joined this discussion since I posted my last statement. You can try as hard as you like to bury my statements... But they will remain here for everyone to read.

I only support the venue I enjoyed frequenting with my friends and my desire to see them stay in St. Louis.
You want to justify your hatred towards him because he didn't pay his bills? In this still recovering economy? That is RIPE. Why don't you be honest with yourself and realize that you're happy that he isn't paying his bills because deep down you really want him to fail... sounds like a seriously deeply rooted issue that you might want to look into.

As a vetren performer in this town, I stand by the community of talent and performers and those who actually support them - Venues, Fans and Production companies that do right by their talent, not those who exploit, underpay and bounce checks to them, repeatedly. Jim is not one of them, not by a long shot. Say what you will about the concept and the venue, i agree they are spectacular and Saint Louis needs concepts like the JJ. But when you run off the talent that makes the show a show by running a business like a child would, you get what you get. If your employer promised you a bottom line paycheck for services rendered, and you busted your ass and delivered, and then your paycheck bounced and your employer didn't answer the phone, didn't apologize, didn't rectify the issue, and then accused you of slander when you spoke out about it... You'd be less than supportive too.

I bet you wouldn't answer your phone either if creditors were crawling up your ass and you're trying to get things under control.
"Busting your ass" are you serious??? ... for a few hours of work per week. LOL
If they actually cared about keeping their jobs they would have given the man some time to get things together instead of resorting to such petty, ugly retaliation.
So... how is business since you left the JuJu? I'm assuming you're making less and traveling more...

Hey Gidget, let me get this straight... You support the owner and his failure to pay taxes, pay rent and pay performers on time.. but you don't support the performers that create the show you came to see? You think the time performing is the only opportunity to have busted ass? Really, no seriously, REALLY? I can't espress how asinine that is. This isn't armature hour, people don't pay for amatures. I may have spent 3 hours on site to make $100, but I've spent ten years and countless grueling hours developing my talents, as all respected performers do. THAT is what it means to bust your ass, and that is why professionally trained and seasoned performers have no regrets for leaving any "job" thay fails repeatedly to reciprocate that with respect and non-returned check. By the way, many of us were ok with a few slip ups by management, Jim's issues go far, far beyond that though... Months of repeated failures on his end of things are not acceptable. (same as maple kings, maplewood, and Missouri dept of revenue).

Amen! I don't understand why people hide behind their comments! I am not afraid to post my name! Honestly, What happened in that venue is sad and true! Everything that happened was completely true. You would work and be told that payroll was to exspensive and pray your hand written check would pass. Hard times...hmmm b/c the owner was unable to provide the needed assistance demanded for the particular business. It is sad how everything has been over the past year. I am glad the questioning and wondering is over. Good Luck to the future venue that sprouts up.
