KMOV Interviews Mayor Kelly on City-Paid Health Insurance for Elected Officials

The day Patch reported on the health insurance perk for Brentwood's mayor and some aldermen, KMOV news did the same report, and interviewed Mayor Pat Kelly on camera.

Thursday morning, Maplewood-Brentwood Patch reported that Brentwood's elected officials get health insurance, paid for by the city, as a benefit.

Thursday afternoon, Russel Kinsaul of KMOV News 4 also reported on the practice.

Kinsaul visited Mayor Pat Kelly at city hall and asked him about it:

"Some residents of Brentwood are raising concerns about the health benefits given to the city's part-time elected officials.

Considered full-time employees, the officials get the same insurance package as other city workers.

That means their premiums are paid for by the city.

Mayor Pat Kelly says the policy isn’t new and he doesn’t consider it to be out of line."

I think KMOV doesn't like the Patch's competition. And also anything that is printed, lately about Brentwood they all want to get in on. Way to go Patch!

It seems obvious to me if the insurance companies won't acknowledge that the elected officials are not full time employees that we should not as a city pay for this. I would much rather that money go to the fire department guys that had to take pay cut/freezes than those officials. I'm not saying the officials don't deserve some compensation, maybe a partial monetary input from the city. I guess my biggest question is, do we as a city pay 100% of all employees health insurance? What does that cost us each year? What companies do that in this day and age pay 100% of employees health care? I bet everyone would want to work there!

Interesting that Akande told Patch the new aldermen would be included in the insurance program, and Kelly told KMOV the program is being phased out. We've got calls in.. -DM
