Cyndi Hebenstreit, principal of the Maplewood Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center, was named Educator of the Year by the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce.

The MRH School Board recognized Hebenstreit for her achievement at its meeting on Thursday. Hebenstreit has been principal of the early childhood center for 10 years.

"I do the work I do in service to the children and parents of the district," Hebenstreit said.

She said one of the most important elements of her job is to provide continuity between preschool and elementary education, and the school district makes it easy for her to do it. 

"Our district does an amazing job of supporting early childhood education," she said.

Maria Langston, president of the school board, applauded Hebenstreit's efforts at the center and her unwavering commitment to the district.

"This award shows the effect her hard work is having in all areas," Langston said. "We're so lucky to have her as part of our family."

The award is presented to a district educator who "exemplifies educational excellence, inspires children to reach their fullest potential, and has earned the respect and admiration of students, parents and colleagues," according to the nomination form. The chamber has been presenting the award to district educators for 18 years.

Earlier this year, the early childhood center was nominated as one of the three best programs in the state by FutureBuilders, the nonprofit foundation wing of the Missouri School Boards' Association.

Hebenstreit was nominated for the award by Langston, superintendent Linda Henke and parent Stacey McMacklin.
