Maplewood Council to Vote a Second Time on QuikTrip Relocation

A citizens' referendum has forced the city council to reconsider allowing QuikTrip to move.

The Maplewood City Council will vote a second time on Tuesday on allowing QuikTrip to relocate to the northwest corner of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at Maplewood City Hall.

The Maplewood City Council originally voted on Nov. 27, 2012, to allow QuikTrip to move its Maplewood store from the current location, but a group opposed to the moved gathered the needed 1,038 resident signatures to force the council to reconsider that decision in a second vote.

The issue is Item No. 9 on the agenda. It is “a resolution to reconsider and to refuse and fail to repeal Ordinance No. 5689, an ordinance authorizing and approving a Planned Unit Development District for QuikTrip at the northwest quadrant of Manchester Avenue and Big Bend Boulevard.”

A majority yes vote by the council would send the issue to the voters to decide in the April 2, 2013, election.  A no vote by the council would kill the issue, and QuikTrip will stay where it is.

Also on the agenda:

  • Item No. 11 is a resolution to purchase a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid.
  • Item No. 12 is a resolution that would allow the Maplewood Lions Club to install four signs on city right-of-way.
  • Item No. 13 is a resolution authorizing the purchase of six Panasonic Toughbook Mobile Data Terminals.
  • Item No. 15 is an ordinance allowing an automotive body shop at 3235 Sutton Blvd.
  • Item No. 16 is an ordinance adopting the final budget for the City of Maplewood for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.
  • Item No. 17, is an ordinance adopting the final budget for the City of Maplewood for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

See the complete agenda on the included PDF file.

So here's the problem. This issue with Quiktrip relocating will probably get killed during this process and as a result Quiktrip will move to Richmond Heights where they have already bought land. The old Quiktrip in Maplewood will lay dormant along with the proposed relocation site at the corner of Manchester and Big Bend. Has anything really been solved as a result of these actions? I think not. Is there a chance that all three parties get back together to hammer out a new proposal that everyone can live with? I'm not sure Quiktrip would be willing to do this considering the purchase of new land. I would hate seeing the city lose out on that Quiktrip revenue.

what will be resolved is a corporation had to bow to the will of the people and the safety of their children. if qt wants to take their ball and go home, that's on them. i'm not sure why they can't stay where they are and open a new facility in rh.

two comments in one, sorry:
to Jesus, first off, it was only 12% of the population of Maplewood that signed the petition, the other 88% didn't have anything to say about it
to Harold: it isn't that the city didn't want to work with them, it was people who were misinformed by a member of the school board who has something to gain if QT doesn't stay in Maplewood

HI Andrea - The great thing about democracy and our process is that by getting 1k signatures (12% of the population, but much higher percentage of registered voters), the petitioners have taken this issue to ALL the people, not just the council. And not just those opposed. Let's continue having the debate about whether this move is right for Maplewood, and then let our voices be heard.

Andrea - on your second comment, I think you should refrain from making veiled suggestions of corruption about public people, unless you have some evidence, proof, or names, you'd like to offer up.
