Mark Twain Elementary Adds Another Teacher
The school has receives the go-ahead to hire a second fifth grade teacher for next year.
Mark Twain Elementary School will soon increase its staff by one teacher.
The Brentwood Board of Education voted to add another fifth grade teacher for the school at its meeting last month. Principal Karen Smith said a teacher was needed to help with the increasing student population.
She said the school once had two teachers for every class, but smaller classes forced the school to offer fewer teachers.
"The population has grown back," Smith said. "We've probably increased the population over the last three or four years by 30 or 40 students."
While this year's fifth grade class has 20 students, next year's class will have 33, Smith said. The state sets standards for class sizes in Missouri public schools and requires Mark Twain to provide two teachers for 33 students.
Smith said the school will examine interested candidates within the district before adding a job listing on MOREAP, a job posting website for Missouri teachers and administrators.
