Mezzanine in Maplewood is Closing
The upscale women's clothing shop was a victim of the economy, but owner Anna Spector is proud of the nine-year business she started when she was 26 years old.
Mezzanine, the boutique women's clothing store on Sutton Boulevard in Maplewood, is closing its doors by June 30, according to owner Anna Spector.
She said it's a revenue issue. She told the St. Louis Business Journal sales fell 20 percent in 2009. She moved her shop from the Central West End to Maplewood last year, where her rent was 30 percent lower, according to the Business Journal.
Spector said she's proud of what she did with the business through the rough economy.
"I was 26 years old when we started this business," she said. "To run a retail business for nine years in this economy. I've got no reason to hang my head."
She said closing the store feels like graduation.
"Frankly I'm excited," she said. "I'm sad, I'm excited, I'm looking forward to what's next."
Spector said she built the business from the gound up with her husband, Paul.
"And we've remained best friends as well as business partners through it all," she said.
They have lived in Maplewood for 12 years, and plan on staying.
