The Maplewood Richmond Heights School board remains unified and undeterred in its opposition to the QuikTrip on South Big Bend moving to the northwest corner of Manchester and Big Bend.
That was made clear in its first public meeting where the issue was discussed, on Thursday at MRH.
Board member Nelson Mitten read a resolution laying out the board’s case, including its opposition to the design, the number of students who cross the intersection as they walk to school and how increased traffic would make that more dangerous, and that QuikTrip has refused accommodations to increase safety.
The resolution opposed the passage of the petition the city council will vote on, on Tuesday “in its current form to allow the establishment of the QuikTrip at the corner of Big Bend and Manchester.”

The board voted unanimously to accept the resolution.
In opening remarks, board president Maria Langston said the board is still concerned about student safety, following an additional traffic study.
“I think we all agree we have graver concerns now for this intersection,” she said. “And graver concerns for all the pedestrians, students and families that will ever travel in this area if this development were to pass.”
After the meeting, Langston said the board met with city council members and QuikTrip representatives earlier this week. She said a QuikTrip representative presented ideas that had presented three times before, which the board thought would increase the risk of injury, rather than making the intersection safer.
“There was nothing concrete that they could offer us in ideas or agreements whatsoever, so with that being said, we felt it was time to make a formal stance based on the current plan,” Langston said.

It doesn't matter what Quik Trip would say or do, the school board isn't going to accept it. Quik Trip could promise to build walls around its store and the school board wouldn't accept it because they would find an excuse why that wouldn't work. The "Safety" of everyone as they put it should come with the people themselves first, not with Quik Trip or the schools. If parents don't watch out for themselves, they aren't going to teach their kids to be safe either. How many times have you had to watch out for people in a parking lot, because they weren't looking out for themselves? I taught my Son how to cross the street and how to walk in a parking lot. You blame everything on the drivers and yet, you aren't watching when you cross the street or parking lot either. Stop blaming Quik Trip for YOU not teaching your kids to be safe when they're out walking to school, or a store, or the library, etc.

I was at the current Quic Trip location earlier this week and two boys came flying through the traffic and parked cars on their Razor scooters. Didn't look at all. Is Quic Trip responsible if they had gotten hit by someone? I am betting Maplewood would surely miss their revenue if they decide to just pack it in. Sounds to me like you are cutting your own throat. I bet Marlborough & South St Louis stores would welcome Maplewood's business. You sure didn't stop QVC & they won't increase traffic on that corner?

Gary - I do not have a dog in the hunt either - but gosh, where was the Safety Officer(Crossing Guard) at that corner after the Saturday night football game?? Lots of students were there and me..
If the School Board is serious - then they should direct the Administration to follow through with some direction!! Lots of talk & no action.

Once QuikTrip is in place at this new location, everyone will find that all is well. Then everyone can relax.
