Brentwood finished the season at 10-2. MRH, now 10-2, goes on to play Caruthersville on Saturday at 1:30 in the state quarterfinal. The game location is yet to be determined.
After MRH senior quarterback Kahlid Hagens scored on the first drive, the score stayed 7-0 through the first quarter.
The Blue Devils scored 33 unanswered points in the second quarter. Hagens on a 53-yard run; sophomore Elijah Keely twice, on a run and a pass; a 50-yard Hagens pass found junior Cortlen Brooks; and senior lineman Aaron Spudich scooped up a Brentwood fumble to score.
Brentwood coach Keith Herring said they planned on running the ball, as they had the last two times they played.
“They just loaded the box on us, and when Nick got hurt, we had some passes open and he wasn’t throwing to the right guy, we knew something was wrong,” Herring said.
Senior quarterback Nick Feathston suffered a concussion in the second quarter.
Junior Marc Powells, who had missed much of the season with a broken arm came in in the second half.
“We had about half of our offense we could run without him being in there.”
MRH scored twice in the second half, both on Keely runs. Brentwood got on the board with runs from senior Rekardo Owens and sophomore Austin Koster.
MRH Coach Rich Nixon said his team continues to improve.
“They continue to grow,” he said. “It’s been my experience, the longer we go, and we continue to work and stay focused, we get better.”
MRH now needs to win two more games to reach the state final.
The seniors on the Brentwood team were #9 Nick Featherston, #11 Jordan Groth, #86 Mykel Hudspeth, #27 Rekardo Owens, #63 Evan Sigler and #75 David Rivera.
