MRH Football Scraps for a Win Over Class 4 Fredericktown

The Blue Devils were down by 14 early in the game.

Maplewood Richmond Heights football improved to 5-1 Friday night in a home win over Class 4 Fredericktown.

The Blue Devils started out down early, but fought back for a 27-20 win.

Fumbles, bad snaps and blocked kicks let the Blackcats have a 14-0 lead. MRH then ticked off 21 unanswered points, and Fredericktown scored late in the first half for a 21-20 halftime score.

MRH scored for the final time in the game at the start of the third quarter and held on for the win.

MRH senior quarterback threw 14 completions in 28 attempts for 209 total yards passing. He had no interceptions and one touchdown pass. He also ran 93 yards in 16 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns.

Junior receiver Cortlen Brooks had 5 receptions for 141 yards. Senior lineman Antar Thompson had 8 solo tackles, 3 assists and 3 quarterback sacks.

“We’re growing as a team," Head Coach Rich Nixon said. “We’re learning how to fight in close games and win.”

He said Fredericktown is a very good team.

“They’re Class 4 and they’re good, but I think we’re pretty good as well, as long as we bring our A game and we’ve just got some things to clean up,” he said.

Next Friday MRH plays Potosi (3-2) at MRH. It’s the MRH homecoming game.
