MRH School Board Protests QuikTrip Move
Board of Education President Maria Langston expresses concern over the QT gas station moving from its current spot on Big Bend to the northwest corner of Manchester and Big Bend. This letter to the MRH community went out late Wednesday afternoon.
Dear MRH Family:
Over the past decade, the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District has been committed to working with the City of Maplewood to promote business and collaboration within our community.
However, we are deeply concerned about a current project planned by Quik Trip to move their Maplewood location from 3010 Big Bend Boulevard to the northwest corner of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard. A CVS Pharmacy has already been approved for the southeast corner of the intersection.
As you are aware, this area serves as the primary entrance to our Middle and High School campus. Each day, students, parents, teachers and community residents walk through and travel in this intersection to drop-off and pick-up students, attend school functions, and visit our community neighbors.
The Board of Education has met with representatives from both Quik Trip and the City of Maplewood. As a Board, we are unanimous in our conviction and have conveyed our deep concerns about the addition of a Quik Trip to this already congested intersection. A convenience store and gas station at this location would pose significant safety issues for our students and neighborhood families.
According to the plan provided by Quik Trip, this new location would substantially increase the traffic flow in the area. Much of this traffic would be routed along Martini Drive, dramatically increasing the chance for accidents with our students and residents who walk within our neighborhood everyday.
The increased vehicular traffic would congest the narrow streets with customers' cars and large delivery trucks. Additionally, we worry about a business adjacent to our school campus that sells alcohol and tobacco products.
We hope you will join our efforts to support and maintain a safe environment for MRH students and families by becoming involved in our endeavor to convince the City of Maplewood this planned relocation of Quik Trip is ill-advised.
If you would like to receive further updates on this proposed plan, including planning, zoning and city council meetings, please contact the school district's director of communications, Brian Adkisson, at (314) 446-1707 or email@example.com.
We must come together to ensure our school campuses and neighborhoods are safe for everyone.
