Political Potpourri: Senate Candidate Akin Uses Obama Criticism To Fund Campaign; McCaskill Has New Ad
Pending student loan legislation is a source of controversy in the race to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate.
Rep. Todd Akin (R-Wildwood) got some press in late April after President Barack Obama alluded to the U.S. Senate hopeful’s comments about government-backed student loans.
At a debate in Columbia, Akin said the following about pending student loan legislation: "America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in. So first, to answer your question precisely, what the democrats did to get rid of the private student loans and take it all over by the government was wrong, it was a lousy bill, that's why I voted 'no.'"
Soon after Akin made that statement, Obama told a crowd at the University of Iowa that “you’ve got one member of Congress who compared these student loans, I'm not kidding here, to a 'stage-three cancer of socialism.'”
“Stage three cancer? Come on,” Obama said. “Just when you think you've heard it all in Washington, somebody comes up with a new way to go off the deep end."
Akin claimed that Obama had misquoted his remarks, noting that the "cancer infecting our society today is not student loans themselves, but the massive expansion of federal government into every sector of private business.” This week, Akin highlighted the flap in an e-mail asking for donations to his U.S. Senate campaign.
“It wasn't just the White House correspondents’ dinner that had Obama laughing last week; he also seemed to enjoy misquoting and mocking my conservative stand,” Akin wrote in the e-mail. “Obama singled out my comment in a recent stump speech at the University of Iowa. He is shocked that someone would stand against the federal government being involved in everything.”
Akin, of course, is locked in a Republican primary against former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Frontenac businessman John Brunner. The winner of that August primary will likely face Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) in November.

Speaking of McCaskill, her campaign released a new advertisement Wednesday attacking recent television ads from conservative-leaning third party organizations. Entitled “Back Again,” the spot argues that the groups attacking her are protective of “Washington special interests.”
"What Missourians need to know is that these Washington special interests aren't just trying to silence Claire, they're spending millions to distort Claire's record because they know the other candidates in this race would be a rubber stamp for their special interest agenda,” said Adrianne Marsh, McCaskill’s campaign manager, in a statement. “Whether it's protecting tax breaks for Big Oil, ending Medicare as we know it or privatizing student loans, Claire's never been afraid to step on big toes in Washington and she'll never stop fighting for Missouri's middle class families."
While MCaskill has built up a substantial financial reserve in her bid for re-election, the aforementioned third party groups have been constantly attacking McCaskill through the airwaves. McCaskill’s response to these ads was recently the subject of a New York Times editorial.
The piece noted that while ““super PACs” and secretive independent groups will be spending hundreds of millions on the presidential race, it is at the Congressional level where big money can have the most impact.”

She works for the "Blue Collar" worker by helping to write a $1.17 trillion stimulus bill which was used to line her own pockets as her husband received payments totaling $966,27 in stimulus funds. She admits that her and her husband share everything!!! But it is true she doesn't believe in Earmarks but finds other ways to get taxpayer money. Also by passing NDAA (The National Defense Authorization Act) which nullifies Bill Of Rights and declares America to be a "battleground" in which all American Citizens can be arrested, imprisoned, tortured and even killed with no due process. I read the bill and there is not an amendment for exception to Americans.When they pass DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell) they didn't even read the bill and LEGALIZED BESTIALITY IN THE MILITARY (sex with animals). Over a year later it was finally fixed not by Congress, but the Military. McCaskill has become a lot wealthier while she has been in Washington. She is in the top 25. I think she has made enough money off the taxpayer and it is time for a change..........

Closing the Chrysler plants was a sign of the times but tearing them down was the crime of the century impacting 43000 jobs. Thank you McCaskill for working for the blue collar worker.

Chrysler canceled summer shutdown due to hot selling Dodge trucks that was built at the Fenton truck plant. That plant could have been reopen had McCaskill done her job of working for the middle class and stop the sale for scrap tear down.

How 'bout doing an interview with Mr. Todd Akin, ( IF his schedule permits) on his post-Obama 'criticism' response? Now, that is what any GOOD School of Journalism would want, so as to make sure there is no biased reporting, right? Also, I am sure that is what PATCH would want as well, right? We know the importance of GOOD journalism and we all know that unbiased reporting is the ONLY good journalism. Looking forward to your reply, Mr. Rosenbaum! The 2 Chrysler plants had 1 billion dollars of plant expansions in recent years and both plants had installed all new robots for their new products when they were closed and tore down. Where did all the new robots go and for how much? And why did they have to tear them down so fast. What was the big rush? The auto industry had a 40% drop in sales and yes they close plants and lay people off but they don’t tear down state of the art pants before sales swing back to normal which they have now and those plants could have been reopen and the 43,000 jobs could be back to work.

Do nothing McCaskill along with her political partners are responsible for not only the closings of the 2 Chrysler plants in Fenton but the selling for scrap impacting 43,000 St. Louis area tax paying jobs that could be back to work, had they done the jobs they get paid to do. We the people are the ones that have been short changed by our so called leaders. Every school, fire, police, teacher group will have to suffer from the lack of tax paying jobs in our area because do nothing McCaskill.

When I talk about the 43,000 support jobs for the 2 Chrysler plants in Fenton that closed and sold for scrap because our leaders were fast asleep after their heavy party life style to busy to worry about our jobs going to Mexico and Canada. Well these jobs were sub assembly jobs that were relocated from Michigan and other part supplier locations across our nation. Yes the big move in the auto industry to locate the parts supplier next to the auto assembly plants outsourced those jobs to our area needed for the just in time inventory systems. Now those jobs were entry level paying jobs that are needed the most for our kids that didn’t/can’t/won’t go to collage. Yes these were the jobs most needed in our area the very jobs that McCaskill claims to be working for. Well McCaskill you just cost us 43,000 of the jobs you claim to be working for.

Claire has lied to you, stolen tax-payer money, insider-traded, and even though she has soldiers in her ads, she & Obama, voted to cut active soldiers benefits. Again, abusing & taking from the very people they say want to help, The Democrats have figured out they can fool most people by, making them poor, giving them hand-outs, then taking credit for being the ones who help these people. When someone tries to stop them from making everyone poor, they namecall, make some asinine claim (like in this story) then laugh like they like they actually understand what's going on. Like, "you people know, we can't just drill our way out of higher gas prices...hahaha" - Well, the fact is you can. At the very least, you can minimize the amount you have to buy from the Middle East.
Drill for 1 barrel. That's one barrel you can sell instead of buy. At $100/barrel, you just turned -$100 into +$100. That's a $200 turn-around on just 1 barrel.
Then the President says "we are in a global oil market (he's right), the prices are dictated by what's going on in the Middle East." Ok, let's take a look at the Middle East where you are at war, where you buy your oil, and where they have nothing else of value aside from oil. The less money we spend over there, the less money they have to fight. Our President can't even figure out that he is virtually funding both sides of a war. He's funding the enemy in a war against the US by not drilling. It's almost treason, the crap these people are pulling.

I used to believe in unions but after what they have done to the automobile workers in Missouri, I no longer have faith in them. An automobile executive once told me that it was harder to get anything done in Mo. than any place, including all the other countries. The unions kept everything tied up and decisions were impossible. Put your anger where it belongs. Work on solutions not the mistakes of the past.

The states that have Right-to-Work laws have a lower average standard of living and lower average wage than Missouri does. The states who had unions but now RTW saw a larger drop in average income than we did, too. Those low wages hurt the state economy. There are less dollars in circulation, less discretionary spending, less taxes coming in. THAT has shaped my thoughts on union vs. RTW.

I am with you to a certain extent. I am for the worker, I am for good wages. But the Unions only made the auto industry's exit quicker, they weren't the total cause of it. It just finally got too expensive to stay in this country and do business. 10 new regulations on businesses a day that no one talks about, etc. And the unions were a part of it, but businesses of all types have been taxed & regulated either out of the country, or out of business. The US has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Yet, to hear them speak, they don't pay enough. There are more people in this country than there has ever been, paying higher tax rates than ever, yet the Federal Government is broker than ever, there are fewer jobs than anytime since the depression, and the economy is shot. Maybe we should get as far away from the 'tax & spend' folks as we can. They're like solar power, extremely expensive and you don't really get any bang for your buck. Plus, I trust you can ALL spend your own money more wisely than the ultimate middle-man can. Oh, and repealling the mistakes of the past so we don't have to keep cleaning up the same mess, is exactly what 'working on solutions' looks like.

I lived much better in Texas, a right-to-work state without a state income tax.
More jobs go to the states without closed shops. That is how it is.

Research it. It is true.When they change the law some parts of the original law was left out. The part of the law that DADT was amended into was part of the Military laws when they had horses and mules. This is what happens when you don't pay attention and listen to MEDIA that doesn't tell the truth. I believe there is a you tube when a reporter asked McCain as to the reason he co-sponsored a bill that included Bestiality. The look on McCain's face was pure shock. There is no hate here. We just want to what is right for OUR COUNTRY and elect the right people this time.

According to the U.S. Senate, members are responsible for crafting and approving legislation, approving nominees for federal positions, impeaching federal officials and approving treaties. Visit the county elections office and obtain and complete nomination documents, which will likely include a requirement of between 40 and 60 nomination signatures. Nomination signatures must be those of registered voters of the same political party as the potential candidate. Thanks for sharing.
