Pie Bakery Coming Soon to Maplewood: Nothing Canned, Nothing Frozen

Pie Oh My! is moving into a space on Sutton Boulevard. What's baking depends on what's in season.

If things go according to plan, by early fall the smell of fresh-baked pies will be floating out of a shop on Sutton Boulevard in Maplewood.

Pie Oh My!, a locally owned bakery that specializes in scratch-made pies will be baking and selling out of the Maplewood location.

Jane Callahan is Pie Oh My, and recently has been baking in a shared kitchen at the St. Patrick Center's BEGIN New Venture Center in St. Louis. She said it’s time to take the next big step.

“I wanted to see what the demand was for my product,” she said. “I wanted to be cautious about it. I think things have gone really well.”

She said she Maplewood has been very welcoming, and chose her location with “great intention.”

Callahan learned how to make pies from her mother, growing up on a farm in Minnesota.

“She was a really talented pie maker,” Callahan said. “She did it effortlessly, and I watched her, and over time I started experimenting with different flavors.”

Callahan makes all her pies with fresh fruit, from scratch. The flavor of Callahan’s pies these days depends on the time of year.

“Right now we’re in high berry season and peaches are coming at the market,” she said. “We’re almost done with rhubarb.”

She said she can always find apples and pears, so she uses those in the winter.

“Pecan pies are great year-round, but generally think of those of being in the fall and winter,” she said. “Cream pies are great for the months when there’s not fresh produce: Coconut cream pie, banana cream pie, lemon meringue pie.”

She makes old favorites, and variations of favorites.

“In addition to a traditional pumpkin pie, I do a pumpkin citrus with Grand Marnier whipped cream, and a pumpkin pie with toffee crunch on it,” Callahan said.

For now, you can find Callahan at the Clayton Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Go try a pie and tell her what you think. She said she loves feedback.

I am really excited about getting a pie bakery in Maplewood. We used to have a bakery on Sutton, and I remember going there a lot, for bakery goodies. My favorite is pies...........so that makes it even more special.

We have been having to drive to the City Diner for our pie fix, but not anymore. Please have a place to dine-in, if you can. A bit of coffee and a scoop of ice cream on the side would be nice, too...
