Proposed Sutton Loop Park "Not Typical," $470,125 Cost to Come From Grant

Following two public meetings to gather input, representatives of Planning Design Studio came to the Maplewood City Council meeting Tuesday to present their concept for an improved Sutton Loop Park.
"It was made very clear that (the residents) didn’t want something typical for this park," principal Scott Emmelkamp said.
He said since Maplewood removed the pavement and put in the turf, the park is looking good, but there’s some things missing, which is what they addressed.
He said it's important to maintain the passive space and to do something that reflects the history of being a loop for trolleys and buses.
Other park features:
- Passive open space with benches and vegetation
- Preserve the existing pavilion
- A trellis, or pergola along a path
- Water feature for play
- Art sculpture (possibly donated after the park is completed)
- Signage that describes the history of the park
The estimated cost is $407,125, which would come from a park grant to be applied for in Oct. 2013. If the grant is successful the funds would be available in 2014.
