QuikTrip Move Opponents to Hand In Petitions at Planning and Zoning on Monday

Petitions for and against a QuikTrip move to the corner of Manchester and Big Bend are gaining signatures.

Editor's note: The agenda for the May 7 meeting came out after this article, and the QuikTrip discussion wasn't on it, so those opposed to the move will not be there with petitions, according to Tanya Powell.

Management of the Quiktrip, on South Big Bend in Maplewood, announced it would like to relocate the shop to a busy intersection that many kids have to cross on their way to school.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School Board opposed the move in a letter to the community, stating a "gas station at this location would pose significant safety issues for our students and neighborhood families."

Supporters of the school board position have been gathering signatures to show support, and will present the petitions at the Maplewood Planning and Zoning Commission at Monday's meeting.

MRH mother Tonya Powell is one of the organizers of the opposition. She said adding a Quiktrip to a corner that already has a plan for a CVS Pharmacy and possibily a McDonalds is a "recipe for disaster.”

A Quiktrip spokesman said it's too early in the process to comment, though a petition in support of the move, along with a rendering of what the new shop would look like, sits on the counter at the current location.

The Maplewood Planning and Zonning Commission will meet at on May 7, at 7 p.m. at Maplewood City Hall.

(This article stated incorrectly previously, that the meeting is on April 7. Sorry for the error.)

The QT location is fine where they are. Stay there.

I agree with Mormit (above). They don't need to move....it seems like they just remodeled the station they are in now....

Also, no one ever came around Comfort Ave to have a petition againist it signed....or they missed my house.

If the argument is because a business will instigate safety issues. How can the traffic of a McDonalds be any safer?

It's not safer, but it is SLIGHTLY removed from the corner. The problem with the site QT wants is that it will cause a significant increase in traffic and congestion at the Big Bend/Manchester intersection where our children are trying to cross the street and get to school. QT will also cause a dramtic increase in traffic cutting through the school grounds and surrounding neighborhood as drivers will not be able to make a left out of the property at any point.

The lot QT wants sits right next to the school grounds. So not only would we have the increased traffic and drivers cutting through the grounds but we would also have alcohol and tobacco sold practically on school grounds and thousands of gallons of gasoline stored next to the football field.

Doug: perhaps you mean the MAY 7 planning & zoning meeting?

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Gina. It's fixed now. May 7, not April 7 is the meeting date.

I think QT should ask their customers if they would continue to go there. I for one, would not. I personally avoid going to Trader Joe's and Target because of the traffic and the parking lot. I can't even imagine getting in and out of a lot on the corner.

I heard from Tanya Powell tonight that QuikTrip isn't on the planning and zoning agenda for Monday's meeting, so she will not be presenting petitions at the meeting.

Good. From talking to my neighbors today, many of us have not had a chance to sign yet.
