QuikTrip Referendum Process Begins, Here's How it Works

QuikTrip Referendum Process Begins, Here's How it Works

Last Tuesday the Maplewood City Council passed an ordinance allowing QuikTrip to relocate from its current spot to the corner of Big Bend Boulevard and Manchester Road. The corner is adjacent to the Maplewood Richmond Heights high school and middle school buildings.

Maplewood resident and MRH parent Tonya Powell threatened a referendum if it passed, and has now followed through.

Powell said she and Maplewood residents Beverly Tronicek, Jeff Wiggs, Jason Dodson and Jim Ablin are the referendum committee. They signed the affidavit to begin the process.

They need signatures from 1,038 registered voters in the city of Maplewood within 30 days of the referendum committee's signatures.

If they don't get enough signatures, the ordinance stands. If they get enough signatures to put it on the ballot, then it goes in front of the council again.

If the council repeals the ordinance then the ordinance is repealed. If they don't repeal it, it goes on the ballot for the next election. If the voters vote to repeal the ordinance, then it's dead, if not, then it is in full effect.

Update: In response to a question, only a simple majority is needed for either the council to repeal an ordinance, or for voters to repeal in a municipal election.

Yes, and then, if you read just a little further more - "They need signatures from 1,038 registered voters in the city of Maplewood within 30 days of the referendum committee's signatures."

Referendum.....Waste, waste, waste of taxpayers time and money. Who else has wanted to take over that area....NO ONE. I've lived in Maplewood since 1960.....and that corner hasn't changed a bit except for Owners & paint...We had to look at the vacant Cavalier car lot, then Shoney's building, then new car lot, for a long, long, long time before CVS moved in and what an improvment that is on that corner. I'm for improvment in Maplewood, not vacant buildings.

I would love to sign it too!

Sara, none of us want vacant buildings, but there are many other kinds of buildings it could be besides an ugly, smelly, dangerous gas station. Once it's a gas station it will ALWAYS be a gas station. That's not true of almost any other kind of business.

I'm very interested in helping with obtaining signatures. I was the treasurer with the group who fought against Wal-Mart. I live on Cambridge Avenue, have been a Maplewood resident for over 30 years. We don't need a predator like Quick Trip gloing after our school kids. Let me know. I'm anxious to get started. You can contact me at (314) 644-6606. Alice Hezel 4624 Cambridge

If another business was wanting to open there, I'd be more "open" about it. Unfortunately, there isn't, so a new Quiktrip would look better than what's there now. I'd like to see Maplewood Scooter Store move to the old Quiktrip or the vacant TKO DJ's place! Also I love Walmart (another fight) and the upgrade it has brought to our area. Look at all the new shops, restuarants, hotel, etc., that sprung up around Walmart. I do however, shop the downtown Maplewood stores to support them still. I love shopping Maplewood and hope it continues to grow with new exciting, tasty shops. I'd like to see it grow like The Loop or Webster Groves as well and have more foot traffic, and it is! Believe me.....it was rough there for awhile and I was ashamed & afriad of where I lived. Vacant buildings, boarded up buildings, home values down. I'm so happy to see St. Louis Lighting Group going in and improving Manchester! How long have we looked at that eye sore of a boarded up building. They fought Schlafly when it wanted to come in and again, it's been a wonderful, delicious asset to Maplewood. How long did it take before Monarch (Katz drug store) improved that corner and now I fear it's going to close. A sports bar/restaurant would be great with those open windows. I fear we'll lose Jumpin' Jupiter too. I just want to see OPEN FOR BUSINESS....not boarded up, run down, vacant shops in Maplewood. Maplewood, City of Progress, USE to be our motto.....quit fighting and embrace.

Sara T -

I am not trying to stop progress. What I'm trying to do is protect the area and in particular the traffic flow around the school and immediate neighborhood.

The plan that the Mayor and Council just approved takes away safe traffic flow around the high shcool and middle school campus. There will be no way for busses to exit the area after dropping off students and no way for delivery trucks to access the shipping/receiving dock. That just doesn't make sense to me.

As somone who has lived in Maplewood for over 24 years, I know exactly the Maplewood of The Past that you are referring to. Poor city planning and lack of involvement is what took our city to those Dark Days. We have come so far and I am incredibly proud to have been here for it and done what I could to help.

My fear is that poor planing and bad decisions can cause regression or at the very least impede our progress. As a resident and tax payer I may have certain rights, but more importantly, I have an obligation to get involved and do my part to keep Maplewood on the right path.

In response to an email question, only a simple majority is needed for either the council to repeal an ordinance, or for voters to repeal in a municipal election.
