Sports Attic Clean-up to Begin This Week, Reportedly

Neighbors of the site have looked at the debris for going on four months.

AALCO Wrecking Company may begin removing debris from the burned Sports Attic this week.

The landmark bar in Brentwood was destroyed by fire on April 13, and demolished the same day.

Administrative assistant for AALCO, Jen Goeken, said the company is "waiting for St. Louis County to sign off on everything."

She said a 14-day waiting period exists after paperwork is turned in for a waste hauling permit. Both AALCO and the company hired for asbestos abatement need to go through the process. Goeken said they're hoping work will start in the "next few days."

However Brentwood City Administrator Bola Akande said AALCO is to notify all property owners within 300 feet one week before the cleanup starts, and RPM Car Care, across the street from the site, has not been notified, service employee Derick Carrico said.

Owner of the lot, Joe Droege, said he's undecided about what to do with the property.

"It's still up in the air, because first of all I'm waiting for the demolition of it," he said.

"Laclede Gas and the water company, it's ridiculous how long they take to get things done," he said. He said the demolition has been held up waiting for gas and water to be disconnected. He said he believes demolition will start on Friday.

Droege said he's waiting to hear from Brentwood to see if he's able to build on the same lot.

"I'm waiting to see what their regulations are before I make a decision on if I'm going to rebuild there or buy another place, so at this point I really have no idea," he said.

The Sports Attic was for sale, listed with Commercial Realty Advisors of America, represented by Ron Kramer, who still has the listing. He said the company is not currently marketing it. He's "waiting for what will happen to happen," he said.

Kramer said he talks with Droege every couple of weeks, who tells him just to take "names and numbers."

The asking price was $895,000 before the fire, as advertised on Craigslist.

Vincent - The Sports Attic fire is still under investigation by St. Louis County bomb and arson, according to Brentwood police. I checked a few days ago.
