Strange Donuts Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Maplewood Shop
The doughnut shop business partners are raising funds for kitchen equipment.
In January, Corey Smale announced his plan to start up Strange Donuts, on Sutton Avenue in Maplewood.
Now Smale has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 toward the purchase of kitchen equipment needed to make their donuts.
Smale and his partners, Tyler Fenwick and Sweet Will, are fans of St. Louis donut shops, and plan to make the "classic" doughnuts as well as "creations" everyday.

I am a Maplewood resident who would really like a donut shop in our downtown. My problem with this kickstarter campaign is that I question the viability of a business that needs potential customers to fund the equipment necessary to make their product. This leads me to conclude that, however good their donuts are, the business would not survive. If they succeed in their campaign and open up a shop on Sutton, I will certainly buy their donuts (bacon flavored? sign me up!), but I would prefer a donut shop that has staying power and the needed capital to sustain the business long term.

Jane, the majority of funding involved with this business is being raised privately. Nearly all of our own money. The Kickstarter is a project to help raise a smaller amount that ties directly to our donuts and allows the people who would like to help an opportunity to do so. Why wouldn't we encourage that? Had you made it to the end of our Kickstarter page, you'd be reading this for a second time. Thanks. Corey Smale, Strange Donuts

"Now Smale has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 toward the purchase of kitchen equipment needed to make their donuts."
I didn't realize reading the Kickstarter webpage was a prerequisite for making a comment on the Patch. Whatever your capital is, the above quote from the article implied that you needed the money for essentials. I was merely expressing my concern in light of that information. Regardless of what you think of my reading comprehension skills, we agree on one thing, namely that there's a market for quirky donuts in Maplewood. Best of luck in bringing them to the strip.

I've tasted their doughnuts - trust me, they'll do a fine business. I like the idea of being able to kick in a small amount to help out a local shop. Heck, if I had the $500, I'd throw in just so I could have my doughnut flavor created (key lime pie, topped with graham cracker crumbs, BTW).
