Two years ago this week, Christ Church held its first annual "Heart of the Church" luncheon on Valentine's weekend as a way to honor the women who represent the history, the strength, and the heart of the church. The original goal was to make sure these "little old ladies" knew they were valued and not forgotten.
But since that year, the event has expanded to a church-wide brunch between services on a Sunday morning. And, as you might expect, the "church ladies" are once again running the place.
Last Sunday's brunch was wonderful, and was great fellowship, but it meant so much more. It was a reminder of the importance of every member to our ministry and our mission. When we talk about the "church," we're not talking about the building or even the pastor. We're talking about the congregation - the members who embody the spirit of Christian service.
We have one "little old lady" who has been a member of our congregation for 96 years and is still an active volunteer. Others taught Sunday School for 40 years. Still others help in the office, work in the flower garden, make repairs to the building, maintain all our financial and accounting records, manage our investments, lead our Church Council, and set direction for our mission in this community.
I am so very honored to serve as a leader in this congregation. And I thank all of those who work together in service. We love you all.
If you get a chance, please come check us out for yourself. We're located at the corner of Bellevue and Bruno in Maplewood. We have a traditional worship service (organ and choir music) at 9 a.m., and an informal worship (with our band Quelle) at 10:30 a.m. See you then!
