Hello! New Chicken Blogger, here, Dorene Olson

Hello:

I am pleased and flattered to have been asked by Doug Miner of Maplewood-Brentwood Patch.com, also a fellow St. Louis Backyard Chicken Meetup member, to blog on chickens.

The rise of urban chicken keeping is a national phenomenon, and Saint Louis is no exception.  I eagerly look forward to discussions with other chicken keepers, be they just pet people (like myself) or urban agriculture people, who utilize our poultry for food and gardening, as well as companions.  I believe that our meetup group is the 8th largest in the nation - please feel free to join us at http://www.meetup.com/stlouischickens/boards/

We are a friendly and enthusiastic group of local members of all ranges of experience and interests, and I am one of the co-organizers whose main interest is in continuing education events and meetings.  We have hosted some awesome coop tours, and are working on a great coop and garden tour upcoming in a few months, I will post information soon, or go to our site.

OH congratulations! What kind and how many chicks did you get? How excited are the family? Where did they come from? I hope that I am not appearing to be more excited than you, but I have to ask - are you going to name them?

If you need any help or have any questions, please feel free to contact me, and if I do not know the answer, I can pass you along to some other local experts who can help you.
