DESCRIPTION:"And a Child Shall Lead Them"\nWe have all heard this verse b
efore and roughly know what it means. Once again the youth of our commun
ity involved in Scouting will make November their month to publicly lead
us in the lesson of helping others. Scouting For Food is a major progra
m accomplishing two main points. First\, to provide an opportunity for t
he youth demonstrate how valuable it is to help others. Secondly\, to re
ach out and provide means to try to meet a real society need and get the
whole community involved.\nThe Scouting for Food program is the largest
one-day food drive in the Boy Scouts of America. Started in 1985 here i
n the St. Louis area\, Scouting for Food has expanded to other councils
across the country. Did you know more than 43 million items have been co
llected since 1985?\nEach year\, our Scouts\, leaders\, and parents coll
ect approximately two million items that serves approximately 500 pantri
es within the Greater St. Louis Area Council\, which includes the St. Lo
uis metropolitan area\, southeastern Missouri\, and southern Illinois. T
his annual collection meets a four-month demand for food. With your help
we can try to expand that four months to five or six.\nThe youth spend
two Saturdays of their time to make this program work and they need our
participation to make it successful. The first Saturday is November 10th
when the Scouts\, Cubs and Venture members will cover the St Louis area
with Scouting For Food bags promoting their program. We ask that you si
ncerely commit to helping the needs of others by participating in our pr
ogram. If you do not find a bag at your door\, or would like to give mor
e than one bag\, please use the bags from the grocery store and just pla
ce them out in the front yard or door step on Saturday Nov 17th when the
youth will once again come back and collect the filled bags.\nEach year
the Brentwood community has been involved in this program. Our highest
collect from within Brentwood has been 509 boxes of can goods. However\,
lately we have been only reaching 320 boxes. WE and the pantries could
really use your participation to help IMPROVE this effort. We all know t
hat times have been tough and the increasing demands they place on famil
ies and agencies trying to help improve these problems. The boys know th
at this program is worthy and they come out each year to make this progr
am possible. Your generosity is the biggest difference in meeting this d
emand. Please will you participate and reach out to help the youth and t
he needy?\nWith so many canned food options on the store shelves\, what
items are best to donate to food drives such as Scouting for Food? The a
nswer that Scouting wishes you to know is after consulting with numerous
food pantry directors in the area and seeking nutrition advice from Rob
erta Larson Duyff\, a local registered dietitian and author of the Ameri
can Dietetic Association Complete Food and Nutrition Guide\, 4th edition
2012\, we compiled what we like to call the Perfect Bag. The Perfect Ba
g contains variety of nutrient-rich foods from all five food groups.\n2
