Today's Clothing Often Lacks Quality

A plea for quality and craftsmanship to return to our clothing.

Dressed in classic blazers and pin tucked skirts, tailored blouses and ethereal gowns; no "fast fashion" or "throw away" clothes—pieces that one could wear to work, to school, to an event looking chic and in vogue every step of the way. As our society succumbs to fast and easy, we have to ask ourselves what it is we are sacrificing. Being able to get clothing inexpensively is in many cases a necessity, but are we paying a price for an inexpensive price tag?

We all have pieces from our mothers', grandmothers' and possibly even great grandmothers' wardrobes. Well loved and well worn in their heyday, but somehow so classic and so well made they can even be worn today. The craftsmanship so meticulous, the details so fascinating, the prints so vibrant, the clothes have withstood the test of time. Today, some of the clothes we purchase wouldn't make it through the wash cycle. Where has the quality gone?

As I gaze at these old photographs - my college roommate circa 1995 in a vintage faux fur jacket, my mother circa 1970 in classic stripes, my grandmother circa 1940 seated in a prom dress she designed and sewed herself - I wonder what story our modern mode of dress will tell in 20, 30, 40 years. Will we look as classic and chic as they always seem to in old photographs? Well, I guess that's really up to us to determine...
