Another Casualty of The Storm: Tree Crushes Knights of Columbus BBQ Trailers

Dave Barks said he knows the walnut tree was 85 feet tall because it stretches the width of his yard, which he knows is 85 feet.

The Maplewood are in a tight spot. , and Saturday's storm blew down a walnut tree that smashed the tongue of their pit trailer, and folded in half a concessions trailer the group bought three weeks ago for $2,500.

Both were in Dave Barks' driveway on Cherry Street that day. Now the Knights of Columbus are desperate for a pit on wheels, so they can cook ribs at the on the corner of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard beginning in May.

Barks said in the noise of the storm, he didn't hear the tree fall.

"I went out to the back porch to have a cigarette, and I thought, 'something is different out here,'" he said.

He wasn't happy when it struck him what he was looking at.

"That was a shocker," Barks said. "It had 6-inch roots and they snapped like twigs." The uprooted tree also lifted a big chunk of his driveway. He said he can't touch any of it until the insurance company sees it.

Barks' wife, Heidi, found some humor in a quote from Genesis painted on the now-destroyed concessions trailer: "God said, let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind..."

"The living creature sure came forth," she said.

The Knights of Columbus would be happy for donations to help them get back on their feet, or a pit they can use. Donations can be sent to Knights of Columbus, 7318 Manchester, Maplewood, MO 63143.
