Patch Picks: Four Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

From honoring veterans to eating barbecue.

Memorial Day on May 30 is designated to commemorate and honor U.S. soldiers who died in the line of duty while serving our great country. It also serves to thank our veterans, and those in the line of duty today. 

It also marks the start of summer vacation and has developed into a weekend of food, music and celebration. This week's Patch Picks brings you ways to celebrate both.

  • BBQ Weekend — On May 27-28 at , where the Brew & Q World Pork Steak Championships will be held. Join the Schlafly team for two days of "bands, brews and BBQ." The winner of the amateur barbecue competition will win $500 and bragging rights.
  • USO Memorial Day Event — Held at Francis Park Playground in St. Louis Hills, this event suggests you "support your troops and thank your veterans" by joining them May 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring a suggested donation, food or otherwise, to give to the USO of Missouri and the VA Medical Center.
  • Take-Out from Dickey's BBQ — Pick up enough pulled pork sandwiches and baked beans for the whole family, then head to your favorite park for a Memorial Day picnic.
  • Register for the — Sponsored by new charity organization the Faces of Freedom Riders, who are asking people to join them in riding cars, trucks and motorcycles to honor military members, veterans and their families around St. Louis on May 30.
