Union Pacific 844 Steams Through Maplewood

A small party of neighbors watched the old locomotive speed by, and covered their ears.

Maplewood residents in the know, knew to be at the train tracks early Tuesday evening when the 'Shiloh Special' sped through town.

Local train expert Charles A. Hardy said the train, a Union Pacific 844 is a 4-8-4, or 'Northern' locomotive.

"It is said to be the fastest locomotive still roaming the rails," he said.

"In the past I had tried to chase it going 80 mph on the highway, and have been left in the dust."

The 'Shiloh Special' is touring the country, helping the Union Pacific RR celebrate its 150th anniversary. The train was full of Civil War reenactors.
