"Over The Top" Scones Coming to Maplewood

The Maplewood Great Harvest hopes to be open in time for Let Them Eat Art.

Maplewood’s soon-to-be-open Great Harvest Bakery (7360 Manchester Road) already has a fan, and she has a recommendation.

Mary Hanson is an artist from Kirkwood, and she went to owner Steve Jawor's Great Harvest when it was in Olivette for half a dozen years. Jawor knew she was an artist and hired her to paint the murals in his new Maplewood bakery.

He closed his Olivette location two weeks ago and is getting his Maplewood spot ready now.

Hanson is “addicted” to Jawor’s scones.

“I’m sort of an expert on scones,” Hanson said. “I’ve had every scone around, everywhere. His are the best.”

She said she prefers Jawor’s scones to the scones at the Kirwood Great Harvest because Jawor uses more whole wheat. Jawor even named a scone for Hanson–the Banana Hanson–bananas, chocolate chips, and sometimes strawberries.

“He mills the flour,” she said. “I think of them as health food. Maybe they’re not the healthiest things, but they’re so good. They’re over the top.”

Even though Hanson loves Jawor’s scones, she still goes to the Kirkwood Great Harvest. She said they make some items Jawor doesn’t. Besides, she’s a member of the Kirwood Chamber of Commerce.

The Maplewood Great Harvest should be open in time for the Let Them Eat Art event, on July 12, and Hanson said she’ll be there, painting a mural or on a canvas.

La Cosecha Coffee Roasters will share the space with the Great Harvest Bakery.
