Bites Nearby: Schlafly Bottleworks Hosts Cask Night

This local brewery gives customers a taste of beer the old-fashioned way.

If you've been keeping up with the foodie world, chances are you've heard of the most talked about beer to hit the St. Louis scene this year: Vanilla Milk Stout. Yep, Schlafly is at it again. Ever since the brand new beer hit the scene in mid-February, it's been selling like hotcakes. In fact, demand for the rich stout has been so high, it's just about gone; the only place Vanilla Milk Stout can be found now is at The Royale, and their supply is quickly depleting.

However, all is not lost; Schlafly has yet another trick up its sleeve: Cask Night. During this bi-monthly event (it takes place the second and fourth Tuesday of each month), Maplewood's own allows customers to have a taste of beer prepared the old-fashioned way.

Here's how it works: Prior to final fermentation, a stainless steel cask is filled with Schlafly's traditional style ale. At this point, yeast and sugar still remain in the beverage, where additional fermentation and conditioning is allowed to happen. The cask is finally tapped, and additional hops are added to increase aroma and flavor.
