Bookstore to Relocate to Downtown Maplewood

The Book House owner said the move will be gradual.

Michelle Barron, owner of The Book House, in Rock Hill, hasn’t finalized the deal yet, but told Patch she plans on moving her store to downtown Maplewood, at 7352 Manchester Road. The Post Dispatch reports the location was previously a Newberry’s discount store.

The bookstore is being forced to move from its location in a 1863 Victorian house because the property is being redeveloped into a storage facility. The house may be demolished or relocated.

Barron said the new Maplewood location hasn’t been occupied for almost 20 years.

“There’s no utility connections, the roof needs repair, it’s a nice great big space but it will take a lot of work to get it up and running,” she said.

She said the move into the new space will be gradual, and hopes to be fully open by October.

A tractor-trailer truck is parked on the Book House lot now, and employees are working at packing it. Barron is looking for volunteers to help pack and fix up the location.

“We’ll be looking for people to help paint, anybody who has any sort of remodeling skills, we would love them. I do have a couple of contractors who will help, too. Anything we can do ourselves, we will. Anybody who wants to volunteer, or give us some building materials, anything, we’ll take it.”

She also plans on putting together a Kickstarter campaign as soon as soon as plans firm up.
