Fight the Heat Wave With These Cold Drinks

Heat got you down? Maybe a root beer float or snow cone is what you need.

Tired of hearing about heat domes, urban heat islands and plain old heat waves? Try an icy drink at one of these Brentwood or Maplewood locals.

has shakes, floats, shushes, snow cones and 26 kinds of sundaes and concretes, plus your choice of 35 toppings. The owner said turtles are the number one seller, though slushes and snow cones do well when it’s this hot.

The custard is smooth and cold, but my chocolate kiddie-size cone didn’t have a chance to melt. It went down too fast.

The guy on the stool next to me at happened to be named Carl. He said that when he used to go there 34 years ago, the original Carl gave him free fries because they shared the same name. That’s probably not an unusual story for this Brentwood institution.

Original recipe I.B.C. Root Beer flows from a giant barrel into frosted mugs. The I.B.C. and creamy vanilla ice cream make a float that hits the spot. You can also get a shake to go with your burger, and if you’re a regular they’ll have it going for you as you walk in the door.

has been in its location across from the for 13 years. Snow cones are the specialty. Made from shaved ice, they easily soak in the flavoring, and are easy to spoon into your mouth. But take it easy unless you like brain freeze. Cherry and tiger blood are favorite flavors, and the kids like blue, owner Karen Davis said.

Davis said she doesn’t tell everyone this secret, but some St. Louis Cardinals frequent the spot. She said the players' wives crave their snow cones when they’re pregnant.

may be better known for the coffee, but any coffee drink comes cold. The business also has fruit juices, lemonade, iced tea, cream sodas and slushes. Employee Lauren Schorr said lemonade slushes are the best-selling cold drink. She said it’s a nice cool place to catch your breath.

in downtown Maplewood got its snow cone machine about a month ago, and offer traditional blueberry, cherry and grape flavors.

Come here for the ambience and conversation as well as the air conditioning. If you want to hear about the metaphorical importance of snow cones, or to be told that there are more interesting stories to be told in Maplewood than something about snow cones, this is the place.

Tiffany’s also offers chocolate or vanilla shakes and malts, and if you're thirsty at 3 a.m., it's open 24-7. You can't beat that.
