Hungry for Fish Fry Season

Spring brings fish frys and barbecues.

I may not be Catholic, but that certainly doesn't stop me from enjoying a fish fry or two (or three!) during this Lenten season. Thankfully, Maplewood and Brentwood churches host fish frys every Friday to keep this hungry girl interested. These fish frys are open to the public, regardless of religious affiliation. However, if you're craving something else, then read on because I have something for you as well.

This Maplewood parish hosts the dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Fridays. Dinners of fried cod, baked cod, shrimp and catfish are served with your choice of two sides. Sides include macaroni and cheese, green beans, spaghetti, French fries, slaw and salad. If that isn't enough food to satisfy you, be sure to check out Immaculate Conception's selections of sandwiches and desserts.

This beautiful church located in Brentwood hosts weekly fish frys from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on Fridays. Patrons can choose from fried cod, fried shrimp, fish and chips, or baked salmon. Sides include slaw, pasta, spiced apples and parmesan dusted potato chips. Still hungry? Don't forget to check out dessert!

Fish frys not your thing? The Knights of Columbus are holding a barbecue this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of Big Bend Boulevard and Manchester Road. With offerings like baby back ribs, pork steaks, brats, and hamburgers, there is definitely something for everyone.

Perhaps you'd rather spend a night in. Or maybe you would just like to save a few bucks. Either way, Whole Foods Market is to the rescue with tons of meat-free recipes to keep you full on Fridays during Lent. Try their recipe for Crumb-Topped Tilapia with Green Beans. It takes less than 30 minutes to come together, and the end result is sure to be delicious.

On the Fish Fries article, you forgot to mention that Immaculate Conception also offers Jack Salmon, which is a breaded white fish, that only seems to be available during fish fries. All the other fish available can be bought through-out the year at stores and restaurants.
