Jones Typewriter Co. Leaving its Maplewood Location

The repair shop has been in Maplewood for more than 25 years.

Jones Typewriter Company’s run in Maplewood may be over.

The building owner has raised the rent more than once in the past few years, and Jones' owner, Vern Trampe, has had enough.

“The rental agency wants more money, and Vern refuses,” employee Charlie May said.

Trampe has owned Jones Typewriter, and been at 7278 Manchester Road, since 2005. May said before that the business was in the space currently occupied by Penzeys Spices. It started in the 1950s.

Jones Typewriter is known worldwide. May said he currently had typewriters in the back to be repaired from Germany and Great Britain.

People have been in the shop lately taking the shop’s dimensions, May said. He wouldn’t say what might be moving in.

He said they want to keep the repair shop in Maplewood. “If you hear of an affordable building let us know,” May said.
