Maplewood Scooter is Still Open, Despite Scooters Moved to Back

The sole remaining employee is both salesman and mechanic.

The scooters have all been moved to the garage, but Maplewood Scooter Company is still open.

The corner at Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard is ground zero for the Maplewood controversy around the Proposition Q referendum. Maplewood voters will decide on Tuesday if QuikTrip will be allowed to relocate there from its location south on Big Bend.

Garett Johnson is both salesman and mechanic, and is owner, Nadir Djavaherian’s sole remaining employee for the shop. The lease is up the end of June.

“It doesn’t really matter if QuikTrip comes in here,” Johnson said. “We don’t want to be here that long anyway, because with just us being here, we can’t afford the rent.”

Johnson said Djavaherian is obviously in favor of QuikTrip moving to the corner. The owner of the property, Dan Lesseg, said Djavaherian is responsible for the painted signs on the shop’s windows promoting a yes vote on Proposition Q.

He said scooter shops usually have much smaller working spaces.

“They kind of piggy back in on another business to justify the cost because there’s not a lot of mark-up on scooters,” he said.

Johnson said Djavaherian is looking to relocate, possibly in Maplewood. The business is also for sale.

“That would be the easiest thing,” Johnson said. “Then they could figure out where they want to move to.”
