Restaurant Inspections: Pizza Hut, Planet Sub, The Post, Qdoba, Sam's Club, San Sai, Shop 'n Save, Something Elegant

See how your favorite Maplewood eateries performed on recent St. Louis County Health Department inspections.

Restaurant inspections in Maplewood are conducted by the St. Louis County Department of Health. Patch has a summary of the public reports affecting area eating and drinking establishments reviewed in January and February.

Grade rankings range from A (highest) to C (lowest). Report comments and explanations are provided in Patch's summary. Follow-up inspections are noted, other visits are routine.

Pizza Hut, 7423 Manchester Rd.
Inspection date: Jan. 10
Grade: A (92)
Comments: Hepatitis A records were incomplete and unorganized. Light bulbs were out in a storage area. Walls and floors throughout the facility have visible food debris, dust and dirt on surfaces. The exterior of a reach-in cooler also showed visible debris buildup, in addition to build-up on cooler seals. Caulking behind sinks were damaged or missing.

During a follow-up on Jan. 25, Hepatitis A records were provided, walls were clean and debris was removed from caulking and freezer gaskets. Racks in the kitchen still showed visible food debris and lights in the storage area were still out. Corrections were recommended by Feb. 3. 

Planet Sub, 1805 Maplewood Commons Dr.
Inspection date: Feb. 13
Grade: A (96)
Comments: Several food containers and wrapped foods did not have date markings. Walls in the back room showed visible signs of food debris and splatter. Cutting boards and a gasket on a refrigerator door was broken, and recommended for repair.

The Post Bar & Grill, 7372 Manchester Rd.
Inspection date: Jan. 10
Grade: A (97)
Comments: An inspector noted that the can opener blade was soiled, several spray bottles containing chemicals were not labeled, several food items were being stored on the floor. Debris buildup, including grease, was noted on cooking equipment and kitchen walls. Damaged flooring in the walk-in cooler was recommended for repair by May 10. 

Qdoba Mexican Grill, 2021 Maplewood Commons Dr.
Inspection date: Feb. 28
Grade: A (98)
Comments: Caulking behind sinks was damaged/missing, and two sinks had leaks. Both items were recommended for repair by March 10. 

Sam’s Club, 2100 Maplewood Commons Dr.
Inspection date: Feb. 13
Grade: A (100 for Bakery, 99 for Rotisserie, 98 for Café)
Comments: A utility sink in the café was recommended for repair by Feb. 23. A walk-in cooler in the rotisserie required repair (also by Feb. 23), and lights in the walk-in cooler/meat area were out. 

San Sai, 1803 Maplewood Commons dr.
Inspection date: Feb. 28
Grade: A (94)
Comments: No current employees had food safety certification. Several spray bottles and food storage containers did not have identification labels, a broken microwave handle was being held with tape, a light cover was broken in the dish area, and walls and ceilings in the prep, storage and cooking areas showed visible food splatter and debris. Salads kept out at room temperature did not have a log showing times to take them out of service. 

Shop 'n Save, 7355 Manchester Rd.
Inspection date: Feb. 6
Grade: A (99—Bakery and Seafood)
Comments: Caulking was missing behind some sinks and walls. A walk-in freezer in the seafood area showed visible ice debris.

Something Elegant, 2200 Yale Ave.
Inspection date: Jan. 10
Grade: A (99)
Comments: Two containers of expired cream were found in the refrigerator. The items were thrown away, according to the report. Caulk was missing from behind a hand sink, and recommended for repair by Jan. 20.
