RFT: Mai Lee Serves Up the Best Vienamese Food in St. Louis

Chef Qui Tran talks about growing up around the restaurant and shares his peanut sauce recipe.

Riverfront Times readers have spoken: Mai Lee offers up their Favorite Vietnamese food, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. Pho Grand, Lemongrass, Pho Long and Little Siagon rounded out the top five.

"Ask your server for help if the 200-plus selections are just too dizzying, but do yourself a favor and order banh bao, a steamed pork bun," RFT advises.

Mai Lee ranked third for its Chinese food and fourth for its vegetarian selection. Rankings were determined by reader votes, according to RFT

RFT sat down with chef Qui Tran in a two-part interview that focuses on his upbringing around the restaurant (his mother is the original owner), and what Tran likes to eat and do in his off-time. He also dishes out the restaurant's peanut sauce recipe.

Tran also recently completed a Q&A with Feast Magazine to discuss his path to becoming a chef, and why he thinks the restaurant is a regular spot for other St. Louis-area chefs.
