Southwest Diner To Celebrate One Year

The Southwest Diner, on Southwest Avenue just east of Maplewood will celebrate its one-year anniversary on June 20, and owners Jonathan Jones and Anna Sidel already have a thriving business.

The diner serves breakfast and lunch and specializes in northern New Mexico fare. He said the crowd comes from the neighborhood during the week and from farther out on weekends. Don’t be surprised to wait for a table on a Saturday morning.

The biscuits and gravy got second place in a Riverfront Times Poll, “which ain’t too shabby, first year being open,” Jones said.

“We make the biscuits, we make the sausage, we make the gravy. It’s all homemade,” he said.

Jones also said folks like the (Jonathan’s) Fiery Scramble, “that’s named after me, just happened to work out that way,” he said.

Blake Jones, from Richmond Heights, was there on Saturday, and said (Jonathan) Jones has a great concept and personality.

“Jonathan is a good character. He comes out and talks to people, and you can tell that it’s not a put-on,” Jones said. “You can tell that he is genuinely interested in making people happy, serving them good, wholesome great food.

“There’s a lot of negativity out there in the world, and I feel if we can help somebody out and give praise that’s worthy of it, they need that,” he said.
