Sports Bar Moving to Maplewood from Shrewsbury

Around February 2014, Maplewood will gain another sports bar.

The St. Louis Sports Zone, in Kenrick Plaza in Shrewsbury, is being forced out by a WalMart  development, and it’s moving into a former golf pro shop at 3000 South Hanley Road, across from Autohaus BMW and just north of the Mini Cooper dealership.

Manager, Luis Ayala, said the size and location was just right.

“We wanted to find the right spot that was going to be better for us, and keep the same customers in the same area,” Ayala said.

Yelp reviews of the Shrewsbury bar note that the bar excels as a place to watch the big game.

Ayala said as far as he knows, the developer of the new Shrewsbury WalMart, CJ Grewe, Inc., has been given the OK to start bulldozing buildings. “I thought they were going to do the old Kenrick movie theater first,” he said.

Employees of other occupants of the mall, such as Mattingly Chiropractic and James L. Schmidt, DDS, have said they have heard very little about the development schedule. Others said the groundskeeper, Russel, probably knows as much as anyone.

Correction: This article previously stated that Ayala is a co-owner. He is not an owner, he is a manager.
