Neurologist Mesfin T. Mitike joins SSM Center for Sleep Disorders

SSM Center for Sleep Disorders welcomes neurologist Mesfin T. Mitike, M.D., as the new medical director for sleep disorders at SSM St. Mary’s Health Center and SSM St. Clare Health Center. Dr. Mitike treats many conditions including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder, hypersomnia and parasomnias. He is now accepting patients ages 13 years and older.

Dr. Mitike received his medical degree from Jimma Univeristy in Ethiopia. Moving to St. Louis, he completed his neurology residency and his Sleep Medicine fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital. He is board-certified in neurology and board eligible in sleep medicine.

Dr. Mitike is dedicated to reducing the risks that result from not getting proper sleep. “We spend one-third of our life in sleep,” explained Dr. Mitike. “Sleep related breathing disorders affect not only our sleep time but the rest of the time we spend awake. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea have far-reaching consequences on patients’ health. It increases their risks of heart disease, strokes and accidents, and makes it more difficult to successfully treat common chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. I believe that improving the quality of someone’s sleep can greatly improve the quality of his or her health and life. I am excited to join SSM Health Care and my patients on the quest for better sleep.”
