Thinking different Thoughts about Lent

Lent can be a "lengthening" new experience!

There have been different approaches to Lent through the centuries.  In modern times, Lent has sometimes been a time of denial, a spiritual discipline to participate in the hardships of Jesus as he moved to and through Jerusalem, to the cross.  People would give up something they treasure as a way to take this journey.

Some people are talking about a different approach.  Instead of giving up something good that you treasure, give up something bad that somehow is not good for you – that if you gave it up, would help you to grow in strength, health, and life.  In other words, prepare for the gift of life of Easter by finding a new way to practice new life in Lent.

The word “Lent” comes from the Middle English word, “lencten” which refers to spring, and which literally means “lengthening.”  During this time, the days stretch; daylight gets longer.

So we have choices.  We can participate in the hardships of Jesus as he moves to the cross or we can practice new life as we prepare for Easter life.  Both paths are powerful ways to observe Lent.  Both ways can add great spiritual depth and lessons to our lives.

Whatever way you choose, I hope your experience of Lent is a time of stretching and lengthening in prayer and in spirit.
