Yesterday was the happy day that Sir Limps A Lot, the injured Canada goose from Creve Couer, surely must have been waiting for since May 10th. If you have been following this goose, he is the one that was filmed by Fox 2 New's wonderful Paul Schankman on May 10th.
An office park in Creve Couer had been caring for him, named him, and sought help for him for eight weeks. After another goose piece was aired by Paul of Fox 2 on my work with some geese in Riverport, the office park women contacted me and I immediatly began trying to catch Sir.
Since he was still fully flighted, I was unsuccessful until I remembered that Nancy Schnell of Geese Peace had just purchased a net gun. I recruited help and Paul caught the whole fiasco on tape. In the end we were successful, and Sir has been recouperating at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Ballwin ever since. This organization is a gem of volunteers and staff who work tirelessly year round to care for and rehabilitate injured wildlife.
So yesterday, after working with a feline behavior client of mine in the morning, I headed out to the Rescue Center to join Fox 2 and follow Sir to his new home. A wonderful woman in Labadie, MO has a 2 acre lake on 74 acres and has been a volunteer release site for the Rescue Center for nearly a decade. She currently has two families of wild geese there raising their young, and one very lonely male goose. She was eager for a companion for him, since when geese are raising families this time of year, they do not welcome interlopers.
Well, here is the Fairy Tail Ending to Sir Limps of Lot of the Kingdom of Creve Couer. When Paul did his original piece on the capture of the goose, he cleverly and darlingly created a theme that followed the goose's name from the office park staff. Paul named them Ladies in Waiting and dubbed myself and my friend who helped me with the net gun Princess Dorene and Prince Guy. So ... wait for it ...
Sir Limps A Lot is a GIRL! She was immediately re-named Lady Limps A Not and took up instantly with the delighted lonely male goose already in residence. Her exit from her travel kennel onto the water was one of grace and amazement, and she delicately and demurely began swimming around with the delighted male goose, who was gentle and welcoming. We all could not have been more thrilled with the happy ending.
The entire piece was aired last night at 6 pm but I do not yet find a link to it online. I would like to thank everyone involved in helping this goose, including the lovely lady who donated her private lake to her release, all of the Wildlife Rescue staff, of course Paul Schankman and Fox 2 News, and the original Ladies In Waiting, headed by Lady Wendi, of the Creve Couer office park. It is happy endings like these that keep my energies going.
