Lost Maplewood

Many of the fine buildings that once graced our streets have disappeared.

When it comes to lost historic buildings, it seems like many of us have 20/20 hindsight.  We can look at the old photos and think that it would have been much better to still have some of these lost buildings rather than what they were replaced with.  It’s much harder to figure out a way to protect them while we still have them.

There truly is little that can be done to stop a building from being razed.  Many folks mistakenly think that having a building on the National Register of Historic Places will protect it.  A listing on the National Register does nothing but prevent federal money from being used for the demolition.  That’s all very well but doesn’t often apply.

With this post let’s take a look at some of the fine buildings we no longer have and hopefully resolve to try and find solutions to protect the ones we still do.
