Healthy lifestyle choices aided by technology

Now, more than ever, people are becoming more and more concerned about living a healthy lifestyle. However, for many individuals, getting started and sticking with a program can be a challenge.  Many people have the drive and the determination to get healthier, but lack the knowledge and support to follow through.  This is where technology becomes a valuable ally. 

With the technological advantages that we as a society nowenjoy, the idea of wellness is something on many more individuals’ radar.  Although it can cause some people to be less motivated, and can add to a person’s lethargic lifestyle, technology can also be a major advantage to someone who is dedicated to harnessing the power it provides.  Here are just a few areas where technology can aid a person’s quest to live a healthier lifestyle:

1)     Fitness Apps – There are so many apps out there
to aid you in your fitness; there are too many to really count.  There are apps that not only track mileage when you ride your bike, but also give you suggested routes.  There are ones that can keep track of your fitness progress by keeping track of workout data (sets, reps), body mass index and total weight loss.  More importantly to some people, there are some great apps that motivate you to move.  They can act as alarms to keep you off the couch and in the gym.

2)     Social Media – Social media tools in today’s society can have a very positive effect on someone’s quest for health.  And it all comes down to the support you
receive.   A person can join a Facebook group that tries to support and motivate one another to achieve their goals.  Individuals are encouraged to post positive results and overall progress as their fitness program moves along. 

3)     Wellness programs – This is a bit of a combination of the previous two items. Wellness programs have certainly gained some steam in the past few years, and there are a couple of reasons why. By being part of a wellness program, you generally have access to some helpful technology tools to help keep your program on track.  There are challenges that you can compete in, classes you can take, and fitness calculators to utilize.  Wellness programs also allow for that support system that many need to stay focused. Many businesses are now instituting wellness programs to improve the health of their employees.
