On Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, Girls on the Run is hosting a 5k race in downtown St. Louis, starting at Soldiers Memorial. The race is open to the public and is chip-timed, making it a perfect event for casual and more serious-minded runners alike.

More than 5,000 girls will participate in the race, which will be “Under the C” – meaning it will be promoting what race participants have been “training for” while also training to run this 5k – Courage, Character, Creativity and Confidence. The race is a community 5k that raises money for the Girls on the Run St. Louis Scholarship Fund. The event will start with a 1-mile fun run at 8 a.m., with the 5k following at 8:30 a.m.

Girls on the Run is a life-changing experiential learning program for girls age eight to 13 years old. The program educates and empowers girls at an early age in order to prevent the display of risky behaviors in the future. Girls in the program spend 10 weeks training for the 5k, while at the same time participating in weekly lessons that help them build upon their courage, character, creativity and confidence. Girls on the Run St. Louis, which started on park bench with just 20 girls in 2002, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and can now boast having reached 10,000 girls in 19 counties in eastern Missouri and Western Illinois.

I was just thinking, if you happen to see something.....like the sign in front of City Hall, or theRead More sign in Schnuck's parking lot....regarding something going on in Brentwood, now you can click on the "Post" board at the top of the page, and let people know what is happening in Brentwood. We have the new format so we can now post whatever we want. Just click and post. Anyone can do it too.

I doubt this discrepancy you think exists is because the editors have more of a connection toRead More Maplewood. I imagine it is because Maplewood officials and Chamber of Commerce members send press releases to the editors regarding upcoming events and news items. If you want your local community to have more of a presence in the Patch, I suggest you contact the proper officials in Brentwood and urge them to send such notices. Self-promotion for a community is a good thing, although in the case of Brentwood Days and other iconic Brentwood events, it was my understanding that the city didn't want it publicized and preferred it to be a smaller event.
