MRH CHIP Staff Partners With Patch

Student journalists from MRH publish their work on Patch.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District has designated themes for each school in the district: “School as Studio”, “School as Museum” and “School as Expedition.” The theme of “School as Apprenticeship” asks students to plan their future and look forward to careers.

The MRH high school newspaper staff of The CHIP incorporates “School as Apprenticeship” in a new way. As of the end of September 2011, members of The Chip staff published five articles on Patch. The stories are first filtered by the newspaper instructor, Otto Schultejans, and also by myself, , the editor of The Chip. After they have been approved by us, they are then looked over again by the editor of Maplewood-Brentwood Patch, Ryan Martin.

This opportunity allows students to get a feel for the real world of journalism. Students experience what it’s like to work in the 21st century journalism field where news can be updated electronically in just seconds, whereas before there were just monthly deadlines for the printed copy. Students now have 24-hour deadlines, which is something they’ve never been required to do.

This provides much needed experience for students and allows them to figure out whether or not this is something they want to further pursue as a career.

Publishing on Patch is essentially laying the groundwork for how The CHIP will run in future years. There will no longer just be a hard copy of the paper. The CHIP staff and MRH Video Broadcasting class have begun working together with the goal of launching an online website.
