12-12-12 and Beyond

Yesterday's date supposedly had "magical" properties and got this blogger thinking about numbers and our relationship with them.

Yesterday's date, 12-12-12, got me thinking about numbers and our relationship with them. Of course twelve is a dozen and who doesn't like "twelve maids a milking" and the countdown to Christmas?

Numerologists report that this sequence of dates will not happen again for 89 years (or in most of our lifetimes) and record numbers of couples rushed to the altar to say their vows, gamblers bought lottery tickets based on the sequence, and pregnant women scheduled their c-sections to have their babies on this date. NBC television even did a nostalgic look at other number sequences like 07-07-07 and 08-08-08. Can I even recall what I was doing on those dates a mere 4 and 5 years ago?

There are thirteen moons per year. Good thing we don't have thirteen months in a year or we could have a real disaster next year with 13-13-13!

The Arabs invented the zero and we can blame them for our fascination with number sequences. Once you have zero, you can count backwards and forwards. Banks quickly caught onto this idea and I have been slapped several times with overdrafts when my balance "dipped" below zero.

As I lay in bed this morning, staring at the clock wide awake, I went through my own "mini" sequence of numbers. The clock showed 1:11, 2:22, and 3:33 in large red numerals on its digital display. I finally drifted back to sleep thinking it would never be 12-12-12 again in MY lifetime.
